Everything I’ve Been Loving Lately
I recently rewatched one of my favorite movies from childhood and I’m pleased to report it stands the test of time!
The Last Unicorn
If you aren’t familiar, The Last Unicorn is a 1982 animated fantasy film written by Peter S. Beagle and based on Beagle’s book of the same name. It’s a lushly rendered tear-jerker about a unicorn who must take on the guise of a human in order to discover why she’s the last of her kind, and to save all the other unicorns in the world from a despotic king who keeps them trapped in sea form. The score is absolutely gorgeous, featuring original songs by America, and the themes of existential dread, found family, immortality, and body horror resonate deeply with child and adult audiences alike. If you’re looking to be swept away on a memorable and sometimes spooky adventure this weekend, I can’t recommend The Last Unicorn enough.
That’s all I have for you this time, dearly beloveds. Be safe and well until we two meet again.
